What is Audiology?

Audiology is the study of hearing, balance (the inner ear plays a significant role in balance), and associated disorders. You must visit an audiologist for these specialized services. They will combine medical science and available technology to come up with solutions to your hearing and balance concerns.

What Services Does an Audiologist Provide?

At Penn Medicine Becker ENT & Allergy, you can access several services with the help of a hearing doctor. All the services are aimed towards rectifying your ear problems to improve your quality of life. Here are some of the ear problems an ear doctor in our facility can address:

1. Hearing loss

Hearing loss is a major issue for those who suffer from it. Fortunately, you can get help from an audiologist at Becker ENT to address the problem. Usually, hearing loss is categorized based on the part of the auditory system that is affected. It can be classified as sensorineural, conductive, or mixed hearing loss.

Once you or someone close to you identifies that you have a hearing problem, you should consider seeking the services of a hearing doctor in Hillsborough promptly so you can take action and improve your daily well-being. When you visit our facility, our audiologists must conduct tests so that they can recommend the appropriate treatment.

Normally, the hearing test is quick, and we recommend it for people of all ages. Specifically, though, we recommend regular hearing tests for individuals above 55 years old, unless there is a specific reason to conduct one earlier. Keep in mind that interventions are recommended according to your specific problem.

2. Tinnitus

Tinnitus refers to a condition that is present when a person hears a sound in their ears, but it is not present in their surroundings. It is often known as a “ringing” in the ears. The condition can be caused by several factors such as the natural aging process and noise exposure.

If you have been hearing sounds in your ears, only to find out that they’re not present in your environment, then treatment might be able to help. When you visit our audiology department, our specialists will commence with a diagnosis to identify the causative factor(s).

The hearing doctor has to conduct an assessment to establish the unique aspects of your auditory challenges. The doctor will then provide a personalized treatment plan to ensure your issue is addressed comprehensively. Sometimes, the treatment may include a series of therapy sessions.

3. Ear infection

Sometimes, people suffer from ear infections that affect their hearing. If you suffer from ear infections regularly, it’s important to discuss the issue and possible solutions with an ear doctor.

Ear infections are usually caused by fluid buildup in the middle ear because of colds and sinus infections. With that said, ear infections can also result from airborne irritants, cigarette smoke, teething, and allergies. Basically, anything that causes mucus and saliva buildup can result in an ear infection.

If you reside in Hillsborough, ear infections may also be more common during the winter. You can tell if you have an ear infection through symptoms such as malaise, hearing loss, diarrhea, vomiting, and fullness in your ears.

When you visit our facility, an ear, nose, and throat doctor will diagnose the infection using an otoscope to ensure that they identify the problem. Once detected, the doctor will recommend a treatment plan to ensure your comfort and ear function is restored. Fortunately, ear infections do not require much treatment. Our doctors may also recommend preventive measures to avoid further issues.

Super friendly, funny, knowledgable, and open to discussing every concern. Had a very pleasant experience and would recommend to all.

4. Hearing aids and listening devices

For some patients, hearing loss occurs in the inner ear. With these patients, we normally recommend hearing aids or listening devices. Usually, these are devices you wear over or in your ears. They help with sound amplification.

You can always trust our audiologists to recommend the most appropriate hearing device based on your hearing problem. You can get a device that is suited to your lifestyle and/or environment. Some devices also have Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to connect to the rest of your devices and amplify them.

However, before you get a hearing aid from our facility, you must be a good candidate. To establish this, our audiologist will conduct an evaluation and then use specialized equipment to determine whether your level of hearing loss requires a device.

Once the diagnosis is complete, we will recommend a hearing device suited to your unique situation. Additionally, we will factor in your budget. We have hearing aids that come in a wide range of styles to suit your preference.

We always recommend that you follow specific instructions regarding the use and care of the hearing aid we provide. Proper maintenance helps encourage an extended lifespan of your hearing aid or listening device.

Other Services

We offer services for people who experience vertigo and dizziness and those whose balance is compromised. Our experts also diagnose and treat swimmer’s ear and recommend preventive measures.

Our specialists can also provide treatment plans for pediatric hearing loss. If your little one shows signs of hearing problems, you can always bring them to our practice to get a diagnosis and compassionate care for children of all ages, including newborns.
