The area now known as Plainsboro was first incorporated in 1919. Before that, it was either part of South Brunswick or Cranbury Township. Throughout the 1970s, the area underwent an extensive amount of development, much of it overseen by Princeton University.
Although the area is largely suburban, there remains a considerable amount of open space, as well as trails for hiking, jogging, and biking. The Delaware and Raritan Canal Trail runs through the township. The NJ Audubon Society manages the Plainsboro Preserve, a thousand-acre area of open space that has trails and a lake.
